This is a very simple and quick pattern that can be adapted to all kinds of phones. You measure as you go making it easy to customize for any size phone. You can work it in a single color or two colors like me. I am planning to keep the gray and cream one for myself. This would make a great project to use up those leftover yarn and I am sure you would find a lot of people you can gift them to among your family and friends. I personally hate putting on the plastic cases that make my sleek phone bulky and think this type of case affords better protection when shoving it into my purse with a gazillion other things.
- Worsted weight yarn in two colors. A soft cotton yarn like I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby is recommended though any worsted weight yarn that is not too rough will work as well.
- Hook F (3.75mm)
- One ¾ inch wooden button
There is no gauge and you measure as you go making the pattern adjustable for any phone.
Stitch AbbreviationsPattern is in standard American terms.
sc- single crochet
hdc- half double crochet
fphdc- front post half double crochet
sl st- slip stitch
Front post hdc (fphdc): Wrap the yarn around the hook and insert your hook around the post of the next stitch from front, then complete a half double crochet as usual. Please click the link to my front post double crochet tutorial with pictures here: Front Post Double Crochet Tutorial. The idea is the same, the only difference will be that in place of the double crochet you will be working a half double crochet.
Leaving a long tail for sewing, chain 30 with the color you use for the bottom part of the case, wrap it around the width of your phone and see how well it fits (pic 1 above). It should have a little extra, up to 3 or 4 chains for the phone to easily slip in and out. If not, adjust by increasing or decreasing the number of chains. Sl st to the first chain without twisting the chain to form a chain ring. You will work the rest of the rounds in a spiral without turning or slip stitching at the end of the round.
Round 1: ch 1, 1 sc in next chain and each chain till you end in the same chain as the beginning chain 1. Do not turn and do not work a sl st.
Round 2: 1 sc in the next sc and each sc of the round.
Keep repeating row 2 and work 1 sc in each sc till your work measures 2/3rd of the height of your phone, sl stitch to the next stitch to even out the edges and fasten off.
Now before you join the next color, turn your work inside out and sew the bottom seam shut with the yarn tail you left at the beginning of your work ( see pic 2 above). I worked a running stitch. Weave in the tail. Turn it inside out again to bring the right side outside.
Upper Ribbed Part of the Case
Round 1: Join the new color with a sl st a couple of stitches before the fasten off point. Ch 2 ( counts as first hdc), working over the yarn tail, work 1 hdc in next st and each stitch around, sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Round 2: Ch 2 ( counts as a hdc), fphdc around next hdc, *(1 hdc in next st, 1 fphdc around next hdc), repeat from * till the end of the round, sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Round 3: Ch 2 , fphdc around next fphdc, *(1 hdc in next hdc, fphdc around next fphdc), repeat from * till end, sl st to the top of beginning chain 2.
Repeat Round 3 till the case is ½ an inch less than the height of the phone. You can insert the phone inside to check the measurement. If your phone is a smaller one you might even have to stop at Round 2 above.
Single Crochet Round: Ch 1( not counted as a st), 1 sc in next st and each st around, 1 sc in same st as beginning ch 1, sl st to first sc.
Repeat the above round 1 more time. Fasten off. Now if you insert your phone inside, it should go fully in.
Pic 3 Pic 4
Find the middle of your phone case and sl st at the top middle of your case, chain 17 and sl st into the same st. See Pics 3 and 4 above. Fasten off. Knot the two ends a couple of times and weave them in.
While weaving in, try to run your needle only through the inner layer of cream color so the tail doesn't show outside. Once you reach the colored bottom part weave them in well.
Weave in any yarn tails left and sew on the button to the front.
Enjoy your new creation!
